Like the rest of the baseball world, Mets owner Steve Cohen can’t escape the Juan Soto talk.
At an event for the New York Golf Club’s inaugural season on Monday, Cohen was asked what his message is to fans regarding the Mets’ pursuit of the 26-year-old right fielder.
“We’re gonna find out,” Cohen said, via SNY. ”It’s either yes or no. There’s no in between and time will tell”

Since the brief “quiet period” broke following the World Series, the chatter surrounding Soto’s free agency has grown increasingly loud.
Former Mets infielder-turned-MLB-news-breaker Carlos Baerga claimed Cohen had offered Soto $660 million. And Yankees announcer Michael Kay added that Cohen would beat the highest offer by $50 million. Neither report has been corroborated.
There’s also been chatter from sleuths who have been hyper-analyzing who Soto followed on Instagram and when to determine the five-time Silver Slugger’s future destination — this is not real journalism, just pure speculation.
What we do know is that Soto met with at least six teams — the Mets, Yankees, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Phillies and Dodgers — and that’s it. There’s been mixed reports regarding what the nature of those meetings were.
On Sunday, ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that those meetings were strictly about “getting to know Soto.” But NJ Advance Media’s Randy Miller contradicted that report on Monday after talking to a person with knowledge of the situation.
“The Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Dodgers and Blue Jays presented contract offers to agent Scott Boras late last week,” Miller wrote.
But Cohen wouldn’t tip his hand regarding where the Mets stand in the Soto sweeps.
“We’ll see what happens,” Cohen said, via SNY. “We built a great team last year, I fully expect to do the same this year”
