    Opinions on its function:  A swift for holding raw wool.  A skein winder.  A yarn ball winder to transfer spun yarn from a skein to make a ball of yarn.  A device to hold several different colors of wool to combine into one multicolor cord.
    OXWELD NUMBER SEVEN is impressed on one of the rods and is visible in several of the photos.  These rods are a low carbon steel used for gas welding which suggests that this winder was made after 1903 when oxygen-acetylene metal cutting was developed.
