Light Artillery Cap.information regarding this Light Artillery Cap (shako) come from United States Army Headgear uniforms in the collections of the Smithsonian institution by Edgar M. Howell. There is a entire chapter about this headgear and it is impossible to tell it's making and decisions made about it by the Officer Major Sam Ringgold who fought to have it approved for wear by the Light Artillery units serving in the United States Light Artillery from 1857 to 1868. The cap you see in the pictures is the early 1854 model the only difference between it and the 1864 is the leather visor is much thicker. The cap came to me missing the hardware and tosses an cords. All the cotton wool blend materials used in restoration are actual and the only difference is these used date 1876 all brass hardware is actual and was selected through carefully exam photos. All originally cloth body some small holes Russian leather sweat band modern. all original very rare you won't find another this Shako is one of the first made in 1857.
