This brass New York Excelsior kepi badge was worn by Captain & Lieutenant Colonel Francis Leland of Company H & in command of
the 1
st
. New York Infantry Regiment. This badge is the coat of arms for the state of New York & is 1 ¾” x 1 ¾”. It is an early war sew on type as it has no attachment wires on the back. It is in good condition with a very dark bronze patina.
Francis Leland was commissioned as the
Captain of Co. H on August 28, 1861 & was mustered into service with the regiment on September 12, 1861. He was promoted to lieutenant-Colonel on December 17, 1862. He was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville Virginia on May 2, 1863 but stayed with his regiment until it was mustered out on May 25, 1863, at New Yor k City. This kepi badge was bought directly from the Leland family & comes with a certificate of authenticity & historical research.
