Epaulets"
Epaulets like this one were worn between 1854 and 1872 in field and dress. Sometime in 1862 they were only allowed to be worn in dress or parade.
This group was recovered somewhere in eastern Virginia forty years ago. Original digger has recently released his collection. No location was given however I can safely say, based on his other recoveries, between Mechanicsville and Williamsburg Virginia.
