Description
Civil War-Indian Wars original brass buckle for bummer or kepi, NOS. These are mint examples from a box full of original new-old-stock stamped brass buckles for the leather chinstraps used on kepi's and bummers. Used up through the SAW & later as well. Box of buckles was mailed long ago to the well-known and famous surplus and militaria dealer & collector Mr. Jacque Noel Jacobsen, who was a major mover in the collecting hobby for decades. Like Bannerman he bought tons of military surplus over the years in huge quantities. Just about every older collector knew who he was, and in many cases did business with him. I know I did for many years, he was a great guy and helped many a new collector get started. These original 'non-dug' buckles look great in a display next to a dug specimen. Sell-it-Now price is for ONE buckle. NOTE: Another more knowledgeable collector was kind enough to identify these as the1858 pattern forage cap buckles as used on caps up till 1895 & later. They came in various sizes, and the smaller ones like these were mostly used during the Indian Wars and later, but some were used during the Civil War mainly on State and cadet issue headgear.
